Althea Gwyn | Women's Basketball

Althea Gwyn attended Amityville High School on Long Island before enrolling in Queens College, where she was a member of the first women’s basketball team to play at Madison Square Garden.   An All-American following the 1977-78 season, she twice led the nation in rebounding. “Thea”, as she is fondly called by friends, went on to play professionally in the Women’s Basketball League, a precursor to the WNBA. Following her retirement from professional sports, Gwyn began a long career with the Fayetteville, North Carolina, fire department, her employer to this day.
