SWIMMING POOL PROCEDURES
All patrons must wear a swim cap.
OPEN-SWIM
- The 6 lane pool is divided into four lanes for lap swimming (Slow, Medium, Fast and Freestyle) and two lanes for recreational swimming.
- Certified lifeguards are always on the pool deck, and use of the diving board is prohibited during Open-Swim Hours.
- The pool hours vary every semester, so for up to date hours, please check the website.
The Queens College Aquatics Department provides two programs:
- OPEN-SWIM

- LEARN TO SWIM (All swim classes are taught by certified American Red Cross lifeguards as well as Water Safety Instructors.)
- PARENT-CHILD LESSONS: Children ages one to three, with their parent, enter a fun-filled class that introduces them to the water and the joy of swimming. Also, these lessons help parents learn how to keep their children safe in the water.
- TINY-TOTS LESSONS: Helps students develop positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices around the water.
- YOUTH SWIM LESSONS:
- LEVEL 1: Introduction to Water Skills
Helps students develop positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices around the water.
- LEVEL 2: Fundamental Aquatics Skills
Give students success with fundamental skills. Learn to float and recover to a vertical position.
- LEVEL 3: Stroke Development
Builds on skills from Level 2 & develops strokes through additional guided practice in deeper water.
- LEVEL 4: Stroke Improvement
Develops confidence and strength to improve skills learned and introduces new aquatic skills. The main goal is to build endurance and learn butterfly and breaststroke.
- LEVEL 5: Stroke Refinement
Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes, swimming further distances.
- LEVEL 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency
Refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.
- YOUTH SWIM FITNESS
- For children with advanced swimming skills. Emphasis is on stroke analysis and competitive skills.
- ADULT BEGINNER
- Provides a class for adults who have had no formal training in swimming or who would like to review the fundamentals of swimming. Students are taught basic swimming skills.
- STROKE REFINEMENT
- Provides a class for intermediate swimmers who need work on stroke development and efficiency. The focus is on strengthening strokes, building endurance and stamina for fitness swimming.

POOL RULES
- No swimming unless a lifeguard is on duty.
- Pool Passes from the Fitness Center must be presented to the lifeguard when entering the pool.
- Appropriate swimsuit required; No street clothes.
- No street shoes or strollers permitted in the pool area.
- No food or glass bottles in the pool area.
- Persons with open sores or cuts or evidence of disease will not be allowed in the pool.
- No fins, masks, snorkels, eyeglasses, or outside flotation devices are permitted in the pool.
- Improper Behavior is not permitted (including profanity, vulgar language, spitting or blowing nose in the water, etc.).
- Rough Play or unsafe actions are not permitted. (No running on the pool deck, dunking, pushing, playing on backs or shoulders, splashing, fighting, flips or back dives).
- No diving in the shallow end of the pool, hanging on lane lines or playing on ladders.
- The use of the diving board/starting blocks is not permitted during recreational swim.
- Lap lanes are for circle swim only.
- Please return all equipment before leaving.
SUPERVISION OF CHILDREN
- An adult (18 years or older) must accompany children.
- Limit of 2 Non - Swimmer children per Adult.
- An adult must be in the water with the child if they are in Level 1- Level 3.
- For children Level 4 or higher, an adult must be present in the pool area to supervise the child.
EVERY PATRON MUST WEAR A SWIM CAP
** - The Department of Athletics and Recreation has the discretion to adjust fitness and aquatics center hours in accordance with a holiday, school closings and community needs. In respect to our users, we will communicate the information promptly. Full or partial refunds will not be granted based upon the adjustments. Thank you for your cooperation.
