QC KinderKamp (Entering Kindergarten in September)
Steps 1, 2, 3, and 4! The QC KinderKamp consists of four topics: Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Art. We are getting ready for Kindergarten in September.
- Each week, we will read books, tell stories, use our knowledge of letters and sounds to make words, and expand our comprehension skills through read-alouds and accountable talk.
- We will explore different authors through their books and create projects to help campers remember the stories.
- Our reading activities will enhance campers' comprehension skills and increase their creative writing ideas, progressing from writing single words to simple sentences.
- Our campers will develop their artistic talents using different art media.
- Campers will surprise their teachers in September as they recall Pre-K Math concepts and apply their skills to Kindergarten (graphing, number sense/sequence, addition and subtraction, skip counting, and geometric shapes) work.
- Our fundamental approach in science is to listen, read, learn, and then explore with hands-on projects as campers evaluate scientific explanations.
*NEW THIS YEAR* SCIENCE ADVENTURES AND LEGO EXPLORERS
NOTE: Each day, experienced instructors will plan a variety of activities in each of the major topics. (Also appropriate for ENL learners.)
Note to parents: Some of our engaging activities involve using various foods. Food allergies should be noted at registration, and we highly recommend you inform the teachers on Day 1 of your session.
"All programs are tentative and subject to change at the department's discretion."
Discovery World for First Graders (entering 1st Grade in September)
Exercise your mind! Discovery World consists of four major topics: Fundamentals of Reading and Writing, Leap Ahead in Math, and Science Explorations.
- Fundamentals of Reading and Writing will reinforce and sharpen the skills your child learned in school.
- Campers incorporate the foundations of letters and sounds with books and read-alouds to build comprehension.
- Creative ideas will be introduced to help move writing from simple to complex sentences to paragraph structure.
- Campers will build classroom-stamina while having fun!
- Math will have us thinking about numbers! Campers will practice: add/subtract larger numbers, make comparisons, skip/multiples counting, graph, time concepts, geometric shapes, and analyze simple measurements.
- The key approach in Science is to listen, read, learn, and then explore with hands-on projects as campers evaluate scientific explanations.
