FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing East Coast Conference play Wednesday evening, the nationally ranked No. 16/regionally ranked No. 2 Queens College men's soccer team welcomed the College of Staten Island Dolphins to Knights Field.
In a match that saw the Knights outshoot the Dolphins, 21-10, two late goals from the visitors stunned the home side as Queens fell by a final score of 2-0.
Queens moves to 6-2-1 overall and 1-1 in ECC play. Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Staten Island marked the Knights' first ECC defeat since October 18, 2023, when they fell 1-0 to St. Thomas Aquinas College. The loss snapped a 19-match unbeaten streak in conference play.
MATCH RECAP
The first half saw Queens outshoot Staten Island, 11-3, including three shots on goal.
Both sides combined for four shots during the opening 15 minutes before the Knights began to pick up the tempo.
Senior
Anton Mand recorded the Knights' first shot on goal in the 30th minute, but his attempt was denied by the CSI goalkeeper.
Over the final 10 minutes of the half, the Knights outshot the Dolphins, 5-1, including shots on goal from sophomore
Bradyn Brown and Mand. However, both sides would enter halftime scoreless.
The teams combined for four shots during the opening stages of the second half, but the Knights continued to control the tempo of the contest.
The Dolphins recorded a shot on goal in the 69th minute, but sophomore goalkeeper
Stian Haugland made a timely save to keep the match scoreless.
Following a foul inside the Dolphins' box, the Knights were awarded a penalty kick in the 75th minute. However, senior
Tommy Gunn's attempt sailed high.
Staten Island would capitalize on the counterattack moments later, taking a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute.
As the Knights continued to search for the equalizer, Haugland and the Queens defense came up with two saves in the 82nd minute to keep the deficit at one.
On the counterattack, Queens generated one final opportunity to equalize, but sophomore
Marko Borovic's header in the 83rd minute was denied by the Dolphins' goalkeeper.
Staten Island added an insurance goal in the 88th minute to secure the 2-0 victory and hand the Knights their first ECC loss in three seasons.
