Lekanides Finds the Net as Women’s Soccer Battles Daemen in ECC Matchup

AMHERST, N.Y. – Returning to East Coast Conference play to conclude the week, the Queens College women's soccer team matched up against the Wildcats of Daemen University at Royal Park in Amherst.

Trailing 2-0, redshirt-sophomore defender Ava Lekanides (Garden City, N.Y.) scored her first career goal to bring the Knights within striking distance. However, the Wildcats added an insurance goal in the 74th minute to secure a 3-1 victory over Queens on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Knights move to 1-2 in ECC play.

MATCH RECAP

The Wildcats struck early with a counterattack goal just two minutes into the match to take a 1-0 lead.

Despite a dominant response from the Knights, who racked up 14 first-half shots (seven on target) and applied consistent pressure, the Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute.

The duo of junior forward Jenna Rosenberger (Smithtown, N.Y) and rookie forward Avery Shreffler (Westlake, OH) paced the Knights as they combined for four shots on goal in the first half.

The Knights carried their momentum into the second half, outshooting the Wildcats 4-0 in the early stages. Their efforts would pay off in the 63rd minute when rookie midfielder Mia Goicochea (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) delivered a precise corner kick that Lekanides headed in to cut the deficit to 2-1.

However, the Wildcats responded with an insurance goal in the 74th minute to secure a 3-1 victory, despite being outshot 23-9 overall and 12-6 in shots on goal.
