FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's soccer team kicked off the 2024 campaign as the Knights played host to the Southern Connecticut State University Owls at Knights Field Friday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half for both sides, it would be the Owls who scored two second-half goals to defeat the Knights to the final score of 2-0 in the season opener for both teams.
GAME RECAP
It would be an even first half for both teams as they combined for nine shots and six shots on goal.
The Owls opened the game as the aggressor earning three corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes of the game but the Knights defense would turn away each cross.
Queens would control the next 15 minutes of play as they recorded four shots with sophomores
Lluvy Lewis (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Ashley Kieblesz (Middle Village, N.Y.) and senior
Erica Petrie (Marlboro, N.Y.) attempting shots on goals but would be denied by timely saves from the Owls goalie.
In the final 10 minutes of play of the first half, Knights rookie goalie
Samantha Hines-Hirsch (Plainview, N.Y.) would bottle up three shots to keep the game tied at 0-0 heading into halftime.
After an offside call canceled an Owls attacking chance, sophomore
Jenna Rosenberger (Smithtown, N.Y.) attempted a shot on goal but once again the Owls goalie would make a timely save in the 51
st minute of play.
However, for the remainder of the second half, it would be the visitors who controlled the passage play as they outshot the Knights to a total of 11-2.
In the 54
th minute of play, the Owls would final breakthrough as they took a 1-0 lead.
As the Owls continued to control the tempo of the game, Kieblesz on the counterattack would take the second shot on goal of the half for Queens in the 69
th minute of play but she would be denied the game-tying goal.
SCSU added an insurance goal in the 76
th minute of play to defeat the Knights to the final score of 2-0 Friday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Knights were outshot 15-8 and 10-5 shots on goals.
- Kieblesz recorded a team-high two shots on goal on the afternoon.
- Rookie goalie Hines-Hirsch made eight saves in her first career start.
- The Owls held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
NEXT GAME
The Knights wrap up the first weekend of play on Sunday, Sept. 8 as they play host to Franklin Pierce University Ravens. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
