Cooke Registers a Team-High Five Shots as Men’s Soccer Opens Three-Game Road Trip Sunday Afternoon

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – On Sunday afternoon the Queens College men's soccer team opened a season-high three-game road beginning with a trip to the Golden Falcons of Felician University at Tryon Field.

It would be missed opportunities for the Knights while the Golden Falcons took advantage of their counterattack opportunities to defeat the Knights to the final score of 3-0.

With the loss, the Knights move to 1-3 on the season and fall to Felician for the first time since the 2015 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Matching up against a tough Felician squad, the Knights were quickly put under pressure as the Golden Falcons notched the first shot of the game in the fourth minute of play but it would hit off the crossbar.

Following the opening shot by the Golden Falcons, Queens would control the next 10 minutes of play as they earned two corner kicks and two shots.

As the Golden Falcons negated two corner kicks from the Knights, junior Harry Cooke's (Market Drayton, England) first shot of the game would get blocked in the 10th minute of play.

But as an offside call negated an attacking opportunity for the home side, a long ball from junior Andreas Charalambous (Limassol, Cyprus) would find Cooke near the 18-yard box but Cooke's shot would just miss as it sailed high in the 14th minute of play.

However, it would be the Golden Falcons who would score first and in quick succession as Queens found themselves trailing 2-0 after the 18th minute of play.

Felician would continue to control the passage of play as they earned four corner kicks and recorded three shots. But the Knights' defense would negate the opportunities to keep their deficit at 2-0.

The Knights would turn on the pressure in the final five minutes of play of the first half as they looked to cut their deficit in half.

After a Felician foul earned Queens a free kick opportunity from 20 yards out in the final 30 seconds of play, Cooke's shot would get blocked before red-shirt sophomore Tommy Wagner's (East Northport, N.Y.) shot attempt sailed high to end the first half of play.

Cooke started the second half registering a shot on goal but would be denied by the Felician goalie in the 47th minute of play before the home side took advantage of a defensive miscue to extend their lead to 3-0.

Despite outshooting Felician 9-5 in the second half including four shots on goal, the Knights offense was unable to pierce through the Golden Falcons as they fell to the final score of 3-0 Sunday afternoon.

  • Queens outshot Felician 13-12, while Golden Falcons held a 6-4 shots on goal advantage.
