Men’s Soccer Preview: Knights Continue Non-Conference Play with Two Games on the Week

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's soccer team opened the 2024 season at home but it would be two tough losses to begin the year for head coach Frank Vertullo and his squad.
 
The Knights fell in a back-and-forth opening game to Assumption on Thursday before dropping their second contest of the year to two-time defending national champions Franklin Pierce on Saturday evening.

Queens College Preview (2024 Record: 0-2 Overall)

  • As a team, the Knights have registered 27 shots with 16 shots on goals.
  • Sophomore forward Miguel Soto Gonzalez (Madrid, Spain) leads the teams with a team-high four points having recorded two goals against Assumption.
    • On Monday, Soto Gonzalez earned his first East Coast Conference weekly honor as he was named to the Honor Roll sheet. (Link)
  • Junior forward Harry Cooke (Market Drayton, England) leads the team with two assists with two points on the year.
  • In goal, junior Noris Iten (Sachseln, Switzerland) has earned both starts recording 10 saves, and holds a goals against average of 3.00.
  • In the ECC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, Vertullo and his squad have been tabbed to repeat as Champions as they earned four first-place votes for a total of 72 points. (Link)

Opponent Outlook

Queens welcomes the Tigers of Holy Family University on Wednesday, Sept. 11 before concluding the week in Rutherford, N.J. in their first road test of the year on Sunday, Sept. 15 as they match up against Felician University Golden Falcons.

Holy Family University Preview

  • Overall Wins-Losses-Ties History: 5-2-1
  • Last Win: 5-3 (9/20/23)
  • Last Loss: 1-3 (9/13/11)
  • Last Tie: 1-1 (10/23/19)
  • The Tigers enter Flushing with an overall record of 0-2 having dropped their opening two contests against the University of New Haven and West Chester University.
  • Both sides are matching up for the ninth time with Queens holding a 5-2-1 record including winners of the last three contests. Last season the Knights earned a 5-3 victory in Philadelphia.

Felician University Preview

  • Overall Wins-Losses-Ties History: 2-1-3
  • Last Win: 2-0 (9/14/13)
  • Lass Loss: 1-3 (9/8/15)
  • Last Tie: 1-1 (9/6/23)
  • The Golden Falcons enter the week with an overall record of 1-0 and will match up against Assumption on Wednesday evening before hosting the Knights on Sunday afternoon.
  • Both sides are matching up for the second straight year with last year's contest ending in a 1-1 tie in Flushing. The last three games have all ended in a tie with both teams combining for 10 goals.
  • Queens is looking for their first win over Felician since the 2013 season when they earned a 2-0 victory at home on September 14 and first road win since the 2007 season when the Knights won 3-1 on September 5.

Week Three Outlook:

Continuing their road stand, Vertullo and squad begin the week in New Haven, CT on Wednesday, Sept. 18 against the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University. The Knights will then head to Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday, Sept. 21 for their East Coast Conference opener against the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University.
