Men’s Soccer Game Day Preview: Knights Conclude ECC Road Stand

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's soccer team ended week seven of play with a victory in their lone East Coast Conference game of the week.
 
Head coach Frank Vertullo and the Knights defeated Daemen University 2-0 in their lone game of the week on Saturday afternoon.

Queens College Preview (2024 Record: 8-4-1 Overall, 5-0 ECC)

  • Queens extended their unbeaten wins streak to eight games in week seven by recording a two-goal performance in the victory over Daemen at home on Saturday afternoon.
  • As a team, the Knights have recorded 34 goals registering 235 shots with 118 shots on goals.
  • Junior forward Harry Cooke (Market Drayton, England) leads the team with a team-high and program record of 35 points having tallied 15 goals and five assists on the year.
    • On Monday, Oct. 14 Cooke earned his second Honor Roll spot of the year.
    • On Monday, Oct. 7 Cooke earned a consecutive ECC Offensive Player of the Week honors as he led the way with 10 points with five goals.
  • Sophomore forward Miguel Soto Gonzalez (Madrid, Spain) has recorded 19 points with seven goals to go with five assists.
    • On Monday, Oct. 14 Soto Gonzalez earned his third ECC weekly honor as he was named to the Honor Roll sheet.
  • Graduate student forward Carlos Almeida (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has recorded a team-high six assists and one goal for eight points on the year.
    • On Monday, Oct. 7 Almeida was awarded a Honor Roll spot for the first time this year.
  • Junior Kevin Johnson (Oakdale, N.Y.), redshirt junior Eyob Gaffigan (Walkersville, MD), freshman Bastian Engeli (Bergen, Norway), sophomore Andrew Johnson (Oakdale, N.Y.), senior Joaquim Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.), sophomore Jason Udo (Bronx, N.Y.), rookie Kleverson Bolanos (Kew Gardens, N.Y.), sophomore Tommy Gunn (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and sophomore Fortune Uzo (Valley Stream, N.Y.) have combined for 11 goals and three game-winning goals.
  • In goal, junior Noris Iten (Sachseln, Switzerland) and sophomore Thanasis Shehadeh (Nicosia, Cyprus) have combined for 38 saves, six shutouts, and one combined shutout, and hold a goals against average of 1.15.
    • On Monday, Oct. 21 Shehadeh was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week and his third spot on the Weekly Report Sheet.
  • In the ECC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, Vertullo and his squad have been tabbed to repeat as Champions as they earned four first-place votes for a total of 72 points. (Link)

Opponent Outlook

Vertullo and the Knights conclude their ECC road portion of the year beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 23 as they match up against the Mavericks of Mercy University in Dobbs Ferry before traveling to Sparkill on Sunday, Oct. 27 against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Mercy University Preview

  • Overall Wins-Losses-Ties History: 8-9-1
  • Last Win: 4-3 (11/4/23)
  • Last Loss: 1-3 (9/23/23)
  • Last Tie: 1-1 (10/15/16)
  • The Mavericks enter the week with an overall record of 6-2-4 and 3-0-2 in ECC play and are coming off a 1-4 loss to Southern New Hampshire in non-conference play on Sunday afternoon.
  • Wednesday's meeting will be the 19th overall against Mercy with the Knights trailing the All-Time series to a record of 8-9-1.
  • Last season the Knights ended a seven-game losing streak against the Mavericks earning a 4-3 comeback victory in the ECC semifinal game in Dobbs Ferry on November 4.
  • In the ECC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, the Mavericks have been tabbed to finish second. (Link)

St. Thomas Aquinas College Preview

  • Overall Wins-Losses-Ties History: 5-8-3
  • Last Win: 2-1 (10/22/22)
  • Last Loss: 0-1 (10/18/23)
  • Last Tie: 0-0 (9/24/16)
  • The Spartans enter the week with an overall record of 6-4-3, and 1-1-3in ECC play and will match up against District of Columbia on Wednesday afternoon before hosting the Knights on Sunday afternoon.
  • Saturday's meeting will be the 17th overall against STAC with the Knights trailing the All-Time series to a record of 5-8-3.
  • In the last six meetings, the Knights are 2-4 against the Spartans but were victorious in their last trip to Sparkill earning a 2-1 victory on October 22, 2022.
  • In the ECC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, the Spartans have been tabbed to finish third. (Link)

Week Nine Outlook:

Vertullo and the Knights wrap up the 2024 regular season with back-to-back home games beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 30 against the Yellow Jackets of American International College before welcoming the Lions of Molloy University to town on Saturday, Nov. 2 in ECC play.
