Men’s Soccer Game Day Preview – Knights Host DUNY in Non-Conference Play Before Returning to ECC Play At Staten Island

FLUSHING, N.Y. -  The Queens College men's soccer team went 1-1 last week playing in two goal-filled matches. It would be a high-scoring affair in the 5-3 victory over Holy Family Wednesday evening before a 3-1 loss to Mercy Saturday at home.
 
This week the Knights welcome Dominican University of New York to Flushing on Wednesday (Sept. 27) evening in non-conference play before concluding the week in Staten Island on Saturday (Sept. 30) afternoon in conference play against College of Staten Island.
Schedule for the Week (9/25 – 10/1)
  • Wednesday (Sept. 27) – vs. Dominican University of New York– 7:00 pm
    • Series History: 3-2

  • Saturday (Sept. 30) – College of Staten Island – 2:00 pm
    • Series History: 2-0
    • Steak: W2
    • Last Match: W, 4-0 Home (10/29/22) 

Queens College Knights Preview (3-3-1 Overall Record, 1-1 ECC)
  • Head Coach Frank Vertullo and the Knights went 1-1 last week earning a 5-3 victory over Holy Family Wednesday evening and fell to 3-1 to Mercy Saturday evening.
  • On Tuesday (Sept. 26) the Knights stayed in the United Soccer Coaches Top 10 East Region as they find themselves ranked #8.
  • Sophomore Harry Cooke (Market Drayton, England) leads the offense having tallied three goals and one assist for seven points on the year.
    • Cooke has earned two ECC Honor Roll spots on the weekly award sheet.
  • Senior Adolfo Martinez Paquet (Sevilla, Spain) has tallied six points with one goal and four assists on the year.
    • On Monday (Sept. 25) Paquet earned his first ECC Honor Roll spot of the year.
  • In net, junior Juan Cruz Ladino (Cali, Colombia) and sophomore Jake Balme (Sheffield, England) have combined for 27 saves and hold a 1.71 goals against average with one shutout on the year.
    • Ladino would earn ECC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday (Sept. 18) afternoon.
    • Balme earned an ECC Honor Roll spot in the second weekly award sheet. 

Dominican University of New York Chargers Preview (0-6 Overall Record)
  • DUNY enters Flushing with an overall record of 0-6 and are coming off a 4-1 loss to Felician last Wednesday.
  • Wednesday's match will be the sixth match in program history with the Knights leading the series 3-2.
  • It will be the first home match against the Chargers since the 2019 season when Queens earned a 1-0 victory.
  • The Chargers are led by Noa Ahlfors who has recorded seven points for three goals and one assist, while Guilherme Pirana has tallied three goals for six points.
  • In goal, three difference goalies have earned starts having made a combined 51 saves and hold a 3.33 goals against average.

College of Staten Island Dolphins Preview (2-3-1 Overall Record, 0-1 ECC)
  • Staten Island has opened the year with an overall record of 2-3-1 and will match up against Mercy on Wednesday before hosting Queens on Saturday afternoon.
  • Saturday's match will be the third meeting in program history with Queens holding a 2-0 series lead.  
  • Last season Queens earned a 4-0 victory at home on Oct. 29.
  • The Dolphins are led by Miguel Espinosa who has tallied a team-high eight points with four goals, while Daniel Angulo has recorded two goals for four points.  
  • In goal, two different Dolphins have earned starts and have combined for 28 saves with a 2.00 goals against average.

The Knights road stand continues on Tuesday (Oct. 3) evening in Springfield, Mass as they match up against the Yellow Jackets of American International College in non-conference play.
