FLUSHING, N.Y. – Playing under rainy and windy conditions, the Queens College men's soccer team welcomed 2022 defending East Coast Conference champions Mercy University Mavericks to Flushing Saturday evening for an ECC matchup.
After trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Knights would cut their deficit in half in the early passage of the second half but a Mavericks third goal of the match would see the Knights fall to the final score of 3-1 Satuday evening.
Match Highlights
- It would be a back-and-forth affair in the first half as both teams continued to weather the storm.
- Earning a corner kick in the 24th minute of play, sophomore Harry Cooke's (Market Drayton, England) shot would get blocked before sophomore Kevin Johnson's (Oakdale, N.Y.) rebound shot was turned away as well.
- The Knights fell behind 2-0 as the Mavericks scored two quick goals in three minutes.
- Looking to cut their deficit down, the Knights three shots in the final eight minutes of the first half would all get saved as Queens went into halftime trailing 2-0.
- Changing their pace, the Knights would cut their deficit down to 2-1 as junior Joaquim Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) completed a header off a cross from classmate Jose Mendez (Queens, N.Y.) and senior Adolfo Martinez Paquet (Sevilla, Spain) to beat the Mavericks goalie in the 54th minute of play.
- Continuing to attack senior Leo Pinto's (Forest Hills, N.Y.) shot on goal in the 57th minute of play would be bottled up by the Mavericks goalie.
- The Mavericks would earn their third goal of the match as a failed clearance resulted in an own goal as Queens fell to the final score of 3-1 Saturday evening.
By the Numbers
- Junior Joaquim Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded his second career goal and second of the season.
- Paquet and Mendez combined for the Knights lone goal as Paquet tallied his team-leading fourth assist, while Mendez tallied his third of the season.
- In goal, Juan Cruz Ladino (Cali, Colombia) made two saves on the evening.
- The Knights held a 16-12 shots advantage and 7-4 shots on goal margin.
