FLUSHING, N.Y. – Looking to conclude their three-match homestand on a high note, the Queens College men's soccer team welcomed the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College to Knights Field in East Coast Conference play.
The Knights' offense would record eight shots on goal but were unlucky to find the back of the net as they dropped the ECC affair to the final score of 1-0 Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Knights move to 6-6-2 overall, and 3-3 in ECC play on the year.
Match Recap
- The Spartans began the evening as the aggressor notching three shots in the first 10 minutes of play before Queens responded with three shots of their own including a shot on goal by senior Leo Pinto (Forest Hills, N.Y.) in the 22nd minute of play.
- Senior Austin Matthews (Chico, CA) would record his first save of the match in the 22nd minute of play with the Spartans on the counterattack.
- It would be a defensive battle in the first half with both goalies and the defense making saves.
- Despite the Knights outshooting the Spartans 15-9 in the first half, both teams would go into halftime with the match still scoreless.
- Rookie Andrew Johnson (Oakdale, N.Y.) shot in the 47th minute of play would get blocked before a Spartans shot hit the right woodwork, however the Knights' defense was able to clear the ball to keep the match scoreless in the 48th minute.
- However, the Spartans would get on the board in the 59th minute of play to take a 1-0 lead.
- As Matthews and his defense continued to keep the scoreline at 1-0, the Knights would continue on the attack looking to find the equalizer.
- As play entered the final 10 minutes of play, four different Knights would record a shot on goal but would be denied by a timely save for the Spartans goalie as the Knights fell short to the final score of 1-0 Wednesday evening.

- Pinto and senior Adolfo Martinez Paquet (Sevilla, Spain) combined to record four shots on goal, while four other Knights each registered a shot on goal.
- In goal, Matthews earned his first career start in Knights uniform and would make five saves on the evening.
- Queens outshot the Spartans 29-18 and 8-6 shots on goal.
- The Knights held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.
- A total of 27 fouls were called with four yellow cards being shown.
