FLUSHING, N.Y. – Looking to conclude non-conference play on a high note, the Queens College men's soccer team welcomed the Bears of Bloomfield College to Flushing Saturday evening at QC Soccer Field on Senior Night.
Led by junior
Leo Pinto's (Forest Hill, N.Y.) first-half brace and sophomore
Adolfo Martinez Paquet's (Sevilla, Spain) second-half goal, the Knights earned their eighth shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory over the Bears.
With the win, fifth-year head coach
Frank Vertullo and his Knights earned their 11
th win of the season to improve to 11-5 on the season and tied the program record for most wins in a single season since the 2009 season when Queens went 11-7 overall.
Just two minutes into play, freshman
Finlay Armond (Sleaford, England) looked to give the Knights an early lead but would be denied by the Bears' goalie.
Continuing their press, junior
Nicholas Tagios's (East Williston, N.Y.) shot would be deflected giving Queens a corner kick in the fourth minute of play. Off the set piece, Paquet and Tagios combined for Pinto to complete a right foot flick past the Bears goalie for a 1-0 lead.
In the 12
th minute, a through ball from Armond would allow Pinto to blast a right-foot shot from 10 yards out into the top left corner for a 2-0 lead giving Pinto the first multi-goal game of his career.
After taking a 2-0 lead, the Knights continued to press and never let up as they outshot the Bears 11-0 and 5-0 shots on goal in the first half.
Queens would put away the game in the 62
nd minute of play as Paquet curved a shot from 25 yards out into the top left corner for a commanding 3-0 advantage.
The Knights would finish out the game without any trouble as they held the visitors to just one shot on goal for their 11
th win of the season on Senior Knight.
Match Highlights
- Pinto notched the first multi-goal of his career for a season-high four points on the evening. While Paquet tallied his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
- Paquet and Tagios combined for the assist on Pinto's first goal, while Armond notched his first assist of the season on Pinto's second goal of the evening.
- In goal, Dario Giovanni Cruz (Guadalajara, México) and Kyriakos Kaporalis (Athens, Greece) combined for their second shutout of the season as Kaporalis made one save on the evening.
- Cruz earned his 11th win of the season setting the Single-Season program record for the most wins as he broke the tie with Julio G. Rodriguez's 10 wins set in 2009.
- Queens outshot Bears 19-6 (8-1 shots on goal).
