FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing their six-game homestand Saturday evening in strong wind and rainy conditions, the Queens College men's soccer team comeback fell short against the visiting Lions of Molloy University at QC Soccer Field in East Coast Conference action.
Freshman
Finlay Armond (Sleaford, England) tallied his second goal of the week but the Knights would fall 2-1 to the Lions. With the loss, the Knights move to 8-4 overall, and 3-2 in ECC play.
It was a tale of two halves for the Knights as Queens fell behind 1-0 in the eighth minute of play.
After a foul gave Queens a set piece, sophomore
Joaquim Johnson's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) header was denied by the Lions goalie in the 10
th minute of play.
In the 34
th minute of play, the Lions went ahead 2-0 as a through ball allowed Molloy to poke the ball into the bottom corner.
Queens would go into halftime trailing 2-0 as the Lions outshot the Knights 5-4.
The second half saw Queens dominate possession as they outshot Molloy 13-1 but were unable to find the back of the net as the rain picked up.
Playing off a corner kick in the 53
rd minute, sophomore
Jose Mendez's (Queens, N.Y.) header was denied by the Lions goalie as Queens looked to cut in the deficit.
With the Knights' continuing press, the Knights outshot their opponent 5-0 from the 58
th minute to the 69
th minute but were unlucky to find the back of the net.
After senior goalie
Dario Giovanni Cruz (Guadalajara, México) denied the Lions on their lone shot of the second half, junior
Leo Pinto (Forest Hills, N.Y.) shot on the counterattack in the 79
th went out left.
With time winding down, a throw-in by junior
Nicholas Tagios (East Williston, N.Y.) in the 88
th minute would allow Armond to poke the ball into the bottom half as Queens finally broke through the defense to cut the deficit down to 2-1.
Looking to salvage a draw, a final shot by freshman
David Oprea (Oslo, Norway) in the 89
th minute would go out top as Queens ran out of time as they dropped their second conference game of the season.
