Women’s Tennis Drops Heartbreaking Opening ECC Match Against Firebirds

FLUSHING, N.Y.-  The Queens College women's tennis team opened East Coast Conference play against the visiting University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Saturday morning at the Queens College Tennis Center. 
 
After going up 1-0 after doubles plays, the Knights would drop four singles matches to lose their first conference match of the season. 
 
With the loss, the Knights move to 0-1 overall, 0-1 in ECC, while the Firebirds improved to 3-0 overall, 2-0 in conference play. 
 
How It Happened
  • The Knights fell behind 1-0 in doubles play as the #3 junior doubles duo of Gabriela Sciarotta (Woodmere, N.Y.)/Chole Certain (Obernai, France) fell 6-3 to Mariona Franco/Claudia Bahamon. 
  • The Knights' #1 doubles pair of junior Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland)/ senior Nathalie Ulander (Stockholm, Sweden) would tie doubles play with a 6-3 victory over Simone Parn/ Sofia Bellucco. 
  • Queens would go up 1-0 as #2 doubles pair of sophomore Mariana Ling (Orlando, Flordia)/ junior Lilly Schmidt (Montabaur, Germany) defeated Joanna Skrzypczynska/Laura Marie to the score of 6-4. 
  • In Single play, #4 singles player Ling would have to retire hurt to tie the match 1-1. 
  • At court #5 Certain would fall in straights set to the score of 6-1, 6-3 as she was defeated by the Marie giving the Firebirds a 2-1 lead. 
  • Makal cruised at #1 defeating Parn to the score of 6-3, 6-3 before Sciarotta gave the Knights a 3-2 lead with a victory over Bellucco with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. 
  • But the Firebirds would tie the match again as Ulander fell in three sets against Franco to the score of 6-3, 4-6, 3-6. 
  • Down to the last match at singles #6, senior Mana Koitabashi (Yokohama, Japan) returned to the lineup after the 2021 season, but she would fall short against Valentina Brienza in three sets to the score of 6-7 (7-1), 6-4, 2-6 giving the Firebirds a 4-3 victory. 
Next Match-up: The Knights will go up against the Chargers of Dominican College on Sunday (Oct. 3). First serve is slated for noon.
