Men’s Soccer Opens ECC Play at Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, CT – On Saturday evening, the Queens College men's soccer team opened East Coast Conference play after nearly two years as they went up against the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport at Knights Field.

Carrying a two-game winning streak, the Knights were shut out for the second time this season falling 1-0 to the Purple Knights.

With the loss, Queens moved to 3-2 overall, 0-1 in conference play, while Bridgeport improved to 1-2-2 overall, 1-0 in conference play.

How It Happened
  • In the early going, Queens put the Bridgeport defenders under pressure with three straight corner kicks but were unable to find the back of the net.
  • In the first half, Queens best chance would come in the 16th minute as sophomore Nicholas Tagios (East Williston, N.Y.) was unable to capitalize as his right kick shot stayed wide of the net.
  • After a Bridgeport foul, junior Amadou Seck's (Dakar, Senegal) header would land wide in the 21st minute.
  • The Purple Knights would take advantage of a failed clearance as Hannes Nilsson put the home side up 1-0 in the 27th minute.
  • Playing behind for the second time this season, the Knights were unable to take any shots on goals in the first half.
  • As the Knights searched for the equalizer, sophomore Tobias Holtz's (Sachseln, Switzerland)  shot sailed high in the 51st minute.
  • In the 53rd minute, freshman Leonel Zelaya (Amityville, N.Y.) would land the first Knights shot on goal but the Purple Knights goalie Clement Anet was up to the task.
  • Still searching for their opening goal, freshman Angel Leon Zavala (Wyandanch, N.Y.) shot would get blocked before sophomore Marco Oliveri's (Whitestone, N.Y.)  shot was saved by Anet.
  • Hoping to send the game into overtime for the fourth straight match against the Purple Knights, freshman Marlon Hernandez (Brentwood, N.Y.) shot in the 88th minute would get blocked before the final whistle was blown to open ECC play with a 1-0 loss.
By the Numbers
  • Junior goalie Dario Cruz (Guadalajara, México) made five saves on the night.
  • The Knights were limited to three shots on goals as Zelaya attempted a team-high two shots.
  • The Knights held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
UP NEXT: The Knights take a break from conference play as they travel to Philadelphia, PA for a mid-week non-conference matchup against Chestnut Hill College Griffins on Wednesday (Sept. 22). Kickoff slated for 7:00 P.M.
