Softball Ends 2021 Season on a High Note

FLUSHING, N.Y. –Playing in warm, sunny conditions, sophomore right fielder Jenny Murphy (East Islip, N.Y.) (1-4 AB) made a spectacular diving catch down the right field foul territory as the Queens College softball team ended their season on a high note as they split with the visiting Mercy College Mavericks at QC Softball Field in East Coast Conference (ECC) action.

The Knights (4-20) fell 1-0 in another tight game one as the offense was unable to get going but the outfielders made two great defense catches in the top half of the sixth and seventh inning as the Knights rallied back from 1-0 deficit to defeat the Mavericks 3-1 in the nightcap to split the Tuesday doubleheader.

Game One: Queens 0, Mercy 1

The Knights were let down by the offense in another one-run game as they were held to three hits. The Knights left the bases loaded in the sixth frame in their only scoring opportunity of the game one.

The hits came from seniors Jessica Hickey (Long Island City, N.Y.)Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), and freshmen Cyarra Alvarado (Coral Springs, Fla) as the Mavericks shut down the offense.

Game Two: Queens 3, Mercy 1

The offense which was limited to three hits in game one broke out 10 hits in game two as they outhit the Mavericks as seven players recorded singles while the trio of senior Danielle D'Angelo(Middle Island, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, 2B, R, RBI, SB), Hickey (2-3 AB, 2B, RBI) and freshmen Alyssa Wilkinson (Bayside, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, SB) tallied in multi-hit performance to the lead the Knights in 3-1 comeback.

The Mavericks took another 1-0 lead on a solo shot to left field to open the scoring. But the Knights showed no quits responding in the bottom of the third as they tallied four hits to take a 3-1 for good.

Alvarado (1-3 AB, R) started the third frame with a single up the middle before Grimshaw advanced the freshmen to second on a sac bunt. After the Mavericks got Murphy to fly out in the right field, the Knights were once again looking at leaving a runner in scoring position. Looking at a 1-1 count, D'Angelo knotted the game up with a double to left field plating home Alvarado. As senior Marisa Sagona (North Babylon, N.Y.) continued to battle in the batter box, D'Angelo stole third putting the winning run at third base. As Sagona worked a walk to put runners on the corner, the North Babylon attempted to steal second but got caught in a rundown which allowed D'Angelo to take advantage and score from third giving the Knights a 2-1 lead as Sagona advanced to third. Hickey extended the lead to 3-1 with a base hit as the Mavericks second basemen was unable to make a play.

Holding a 3-1 lead, the Knights game two starter freshmen Arianna Fracchioni (Westbury, N.Y.) (W, 7.0 IP, 8H, ER, BB, K) and her defense went to work as they held eight Mavericks runners on base including a bases-loaded situation in the top of the fifth inning. The Knights made two diving catches to end the sixth and seventh inning. In the sixth, with the Mavericks two out and runners on second and first, D'Angelo laid out for a diving catch to get the last out as the Knights continued to fight back.

Fracchioni entered the seventh inning still holding a 3-1 lead as she faced the Mavericks top three hitters to close out the game. The first batter delivered with a successful bunt at home plate to get on base. But the Westbury native remained unruffled as she got the next batter to ground out back to her but the Mavericks runner would advance to second. Fracchioni was made to work for the second out as the Mavericks third batter of the inning fouled five straight pitches but the rookie would prevail in the end as she got the second out with a grounder to Hickey at second base. The Knights would end their season on a positive note as the right fielder Murphy made a diving catch in foul territory to get the last out for a 3-1 win!

A season-recap will be provided at a later date.
