SPARKILL, N.Y.- Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Queens College Knights Softball team dropped two East Coast Conference (ECC) games Saturday afternoon at St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans in Sparkill, N.Y.
The Knights dropped game one 3-0, before falling in the nightcap 10-2 in six innings. With the losses, the Knights moved to 1-5 overall, 1-5 in ECC play, while the Spartans moved to 8-2 overall, 2-0 in ECC.
Game One: Queens College 0, STAC 3
Junior shortstop
Noelle Bryggman (Huntington, N.Y) (1-3 AB) broke up the no-hitter in the sixth inning with a single down the right-field line. But the Knights offense was unable to get going as they were only able to have three runners on base, with two runners in scoring position in the third and sixth frame. While the senior duo
Jessica Hickey (Long Island City, N.Y.) and
Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) recorded a walk on the day,
Freshman righty
Arianna Fracchioni (Westbury, N.Y.) (0-3, 6.0 IP, 6H, 3ER, K, BB) took the complete-game loss.
Game Two: Queens College 2, STAC 10 (6 innings)
After having only one hit and three bases runners in game one, the Knights tallied eight hits in game two for two runs but left nine runners on base as they fell 10-2 in the nightcap.
After the Spartans took another 1-0 early lead after the first inning, the Knights answered back in the second inning as the offense was finally able to answer with runs of their own.
With two outs, freshman right fielder
Alyssa Wilkinson (Bayside, N.Y.) (1-2 AB, 3B, R, RBI, BB) tripled to right field as the Knights knotted the game 1-1. Classmate
Kristina Verruso (Whitestone, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, 2B, RBI) gave the Knights their first lead (2-1) of the afternoon with a single to right-center as Wilkinson plated home.
But the lead was short-lived as the Spartans offense tallied four runs in the second and third inning to go up 9-2 before tallying a run in the sixth to complete the sweep.
UP NEXT: It will be a short rest for the Knights as they continue ECC play with a Sunday (Apr. 11) afternoon doubleheader as new ECC member D'Youville College Saints come to Flushing. Game one is slated to start at noon.
