Slow Start Hurts Women’s Basketball in 78-63 Loss to Franklin Pierce

FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon the Queens College women's basketball team came out cold and couldn't battle all the way back as the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University took a 78-63 victory in non-conference action at Lucille Kyvallos Court.

How it Happened

In a nightmarish start to the game, Queens (0-5) went 4-of-16 from the floor to start the first quarter. As the Knights missed their first eight shots of the game, Franklin Pierce (5-2) would take a 10-0 lead before freshman Eldina Dervisevic (Queens, N.Y.) put back her own shot for the Knights first points of the game with 5:53 on the clock.

Looking to find a rhythm sophomore Aalia Carlson (Montclair, N.J.) would knock down a three to bring the Knights within five (10-5). But the visitors would close the first quarter on a 12-4 run

With the Ravens dominating the paint, the Knights looked to come back in the game as they went on an 11-7 run. Queens would bring the deficit down to nine (29-20) led by junior Khadija Demry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who tallied six straight pointsHowever the Knights would go into halftime trailing 40-28.

A 12 point deficit would balloon to much as 25 points as the Ravens would put the game away in the third quarter. The Knights would finish the game on a 14-4 run to fall to the final score of 78-63.

By the Numbers

The offense was led by Demry who tallied a team-high 18 points (8-of-19 FG) with three rebounds, while Tsahai Corbie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) filled the stats sheet with 15 points (6-of-12 FG), six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

Earning their first start of the season Dervisevic put her best effort of the season with five points, team-high 10 rebounds, two blocks, and three steals, while Carlson tallied nine points to go with three rebounds on the day.

Queens shot 35.3 percent (24-of-68) from the field and 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from three. While Franklin Pierce shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the field and 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc.
