FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 4, 2020) - The Queens College women's tennis team commenced the spring portion of its season on Wednesday (Mar. 4) as the Knights hosted Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University at the Queens College Tennis Center. QC was a hard-luck loser in doubles play which led to FDU winning a 5-2 match on the afternoon.
By no means was it easy for Fairleigh Dickinson on the day, however. Queens won the first doubles tandem with
Luisa Auffarth and
Maja Makal rolling to a 6-1 win against Alena Kubanova and Aleksandra Vorozheikina. The visiting Knights won the third tandem by a 6-1 margin as well, leaving the doubles point up for grabs to both sides at the No. 2 spot. It went to a tiebreak but FDU's pairing of Tatiana and Patricia Efteniou knocked off
Lovisa Engstrand and
Aleksandra Caricic in a 7-6 (7-3) classic, giving the Division I Knights a 1-0 lead.
Fairleigh Dickinson won two straight singles flights to open up a 3-0 advantage before Engstrand broke the shut-out with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Shreya Gulia at the No. 3 spot. With
Gabriela Sciarotta and Caricic losing back-to-back three setters, Queens could only muster up one more point on Makal's win at second-singles versus Vorozheikina in a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (10-7) marathon match-up.
Queens returns to action on Mar. 13 as the Knights host Fordham University at 12 p.m.
