OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2020) – The Queens College women's basketball team was unable to climb all the way out of an early hole on Saturday (Feb. 15) as the Knights fell to New York Tech by a final score of 70-46 at Recreation Hall in Old Westbury.
Queens is now 7-16 on the year with the loss and 4-9 in East Coast Conference play. New York Tech, meanwhile, improved to 15-9 on the season and 8-4 in league action with the win.
To open the game, New York Tech scored the game's first six points before Queens responded with a 6-0 run of its own.
Brianne Moxley hit three field goals to bring the Knights level with the Bears but the hosts finished the first quarter on an 11-0 run. Ketsia Athias led the rally with a three-point play and back-to-back three-pointers from Meg Knollmeyer and Haley Dalonzo sealed the run with New York Tech leading by a 17-6 margin. The spurt was 13-0 after Carol Arfinengo started the second quarter with a lay-up but
Tayanee Peay put Queens back on the scoreboard with a jumper at the eight-minute mark of play. Queens trailed by a 34-15 margin at the end of the first half.
Unfortunately for the Knights, New York Tech went on a hot streak from the floor in the third quarter; the Bears went 9-of-16 (56%) from the floor coming out of the halftime break and led Queens by a 58-30 score after three periods of play.
Lucy Tougas ended the contest with a team-high 15 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds. Tougas scored ten of those points in the second half while Moxley finished with 10 points and two steals.
Raiana Brown scored 14 points but also did much of her damage in the second half; the rookie forward had five rebounds.
Chidinma Ndukauba pulled down ten rebounds and added two steals in the Knights' effort.
Zoe Amalbert had a game-high 16 points to lead New York Tech in the win as one of four Bears in double-figure points on the game. Arfinengo and Knollmeyer added 14 and Athias poured in 11 points.
Queens remains in the final play-off spot in the ECC despite the loss, as Bridgeport's win over UDC put both of those teams to a 3-9 mark in the league standings. Queens hosts St. Thomas Aquinas in the Knights' home finale on Wednesday (Feb. 19) at 7:30 p.m.
