Brianne Moxley and
Chidinma Ndukauba combined for 18 first-half points but
Tayanee Peay's big second half keyed the Queens College women's basketball team to a 65-60 win over Mercy College on Wednesday (Jan. 15) in Flushing.
Queens is now 5-11 on the season and 2-4 in East Coast Conference play while Mercy's record stands at 6-11 on the year and 0-6 in league action following the loss.
The Knights took their first lead of the game with just under five minutes to play in the final quarter after being behind by nine points at halftime and 13 points at one point in the opening stanza.
Peay finished the contest with 21 points, 14 of which came in the fourth quarter. The point guard had nine rebounds and five assists and was 9-for-14 from the free throw line including going 6-for-8 in the final frame. Moxley finished the game with 21 points and nine rebounds to go along with five assists while Ndukauba had a strong showing with 15 points and eight rebounds. Reigning ECC Rookie of the Week
Raiana Brown was held to just four points but made an impact on the defensive side of the ball with 13 rebounds, five blocks and three steals.
For Mercy, Taysha Bender scored 12 first-half points off the bench and ended the contest with a team-high 14 points. Alexis Lake added six points and 11 rebounds as Destinee Hall and Amber Brown combined for 25 points in the contest. Katie Wall had eight points, six rebounds and four assists for the Mavericks.
The Knights never held an advantage in the first half as the Mavericks raced out to a 10-4 lead in the first quarter of action. Mercy led 33-24 at the end of one half of play, shooting 38% (13-34) from the floor; Queens, meanwhile, was limited to an 11-for-33 mark (33%) from the field in the opening frame of play. The hosts were able to bring the game within a six-point mark in the third quarter as Moxley led most of the charge with the team hitting 8-of-14 (57%) from the field out of the halftime break. Peay and Moxley brought Queens within two points to start the final quarter before Mercy kicked the lead back up to eight with what was at the time a back-breaking three-pointer from sub Trinity Hudson. The Knights dug in, however, to go on an 11-0 run to claim a 57-54 lead with Peay scoring the last five points of the run.
Queens returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 18) as the Knights head to Sparkill, N.Y. to face St. Thomas Aquinas College at 1 p.m.
