FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 22, 2019) - The Queens College women's tennis team held an early advantage before play even began on Sunday (Sept. 22) and the Knights cruised to their fourth straight win to open the season by defeating Wilmington (Del.) in a 6-1 match at the outdoor courts of the QC Tennis Center.
The visiting Wildcats (0-2) only had four players in competition, meaning that the Knights opened the match with an automatic advantage in doubles play. Needing to win just one doubles match to take the point, the tandem of
Luisa Auffarth and
Anica Knezevic rolled to a 6-1 lead in the No. 2 doubles match to give Queens (4-0) a 1-0 lead overall.
The Knights then quickly grabbed a 3-0 lead thanks to winning fifth- and sixth-singles by default.
Ruth Artaza Martin clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at fourth-singles over Mallory Nolte just before Auffarth won a 6-3, 6-1 decision at the top-flight of singles to put Queens up by a 5-0 margin. At third singles,
Marisa Ostoja won a 6-4, 6-1 match to give QC the 6-0 lead but Wilmington won at second-singles to avoid the sweep.
The Knights will compete at the Hofstra Invitational beginning on Friday (Sept. 27) in Hempstead.
