Softball Plays Gritty Doubleheader But Falls to Bridgeport Saturday

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2019) – The Queens College softball team put together a strong first-game rally that fell just short against the University of Bridgeport on Saturday (Apr. 13) as the Knights dropped a 5-4 decision to their conference counterparts in Flushing. Bridgeport completed the sweep with a 5-1 win in the proverbial nightcap of the doubleheader.

Game One: Bridgeport 5, Queens (NY) 4
The Purple Knights did all of their damage in the first two innings with two runs in the first and three in the second against QC starter Allie Stanya. Jenna DiLorenzo hit a run-scoring single and Kamryn Beach recorded an RBI groundout to give UB a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, a solo home run by Allison Luzzi was followed by a two-run jack from Kaira Ramon to give Bridgeport a 5-0 lead. Queens could not solve Bridgeport starter Amanda Staheli threw the first four innings but mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI single by Jessica Hickey broke up the shutout and put the Knights down by a four-run deficit.

In the sixth inning, a wild sequence ensued that saw Queens record three runs as Lauren Pasucal and Danielle D'Angelo knocked in runs with singles to right and right-center. A fielder's choice from Maryjane D'Agostino scored another run and put the Knights within a run, but Staheli slammed the door and silenced the threat in the bottom of the seventh as well.

D'Angelo had two hits in the opener with Hickey, Pascual and Sharina Nazario also recording hits. Stanya managed to get through a rocky start as she ended the game with five no-hit innings from the third through the seventh frames. The freshman recorded two strikeouts in the circle, as well.

Game Two: Bridgeport 5, Queens (NY) 1
Bridgeport took the lead in the first inning on a two-out rally against QC starter Emma Wimmer that concluded with an RBI double by Samantha Sabor. Queens tied the contest in the third on an RBI hit by Nazario down the left field line, but the Purple Knights responded in the fourth as DiLorenzo sent a screaming line drive over the center field fence to score Ramon and put UB up by a 3-1 margin. The visitors added a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh to provide the final difference.

Wimmer went the distance for the Knights in the loss, striking out a batter in her seven innings of work. Queens had just three hits with Nazario, Pascual and Gabriella Vicidomini all reaching base safely with singles.

The Knights will host Mercy College on Tuesday (Apr. 16) in an ECC doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
