FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2019) – The Queens College women's soccer team honored its class of seniors on Saturday (Nov. 9) and played a spirited and competitive match with Molloy before falling to the Lions by a final count of 2-1 in the team's regular season finale at Knights Field.
Queens ends the year with a 7-9-1 overall record and a 1-6-1 mark in ECC action. Molloy locked up a postseason berth and moves to 13-4-1 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
How It Happened
- Molloy struck in the eighth minute as a long clearance from Lexi Verni found Jessica Mauro, who eventually passed to Dana Poetzsch for the game's opening goal. Poetzsch beat goalie Shenae Kreps on the effort to give the Lions the 1-0 lead.
- Queens would take most of the first half to return fire, but the Knights did thanks to tic-tac-toe passing as Guro Eriksen and Agnes Stanton combined to feed Sarafina Smith just outside the 18-yard box. Smith then sent a nifty, left-footed curler over the reach of Molloy goalie Jackie Carty to level the score at 1-1 with five minutes to play in the half.
- Mere minutes later, Poetzsch found herself on a cutting feed from Amy D'Eloia to score another goal and put the visitors up by a 2-1 margin. This would remain the score throughout the second half.
Knights That Shined
- Were it not for the solid goalkeeping of Kreps, the Knights may have lost the game by a few more goals. The sophomore made eight saves, including robbing Poetzsch of a goal on both a penalty kick and then a one-on-one breakaway with a kick save in the second half.
- Smith led the Knights with three shots in the contest while Stanton added two targets.
Honoring the Seniors
Prior to the game, Queens paid respect to its three members of the Class of 2020 from the women's soccer team:
Guro Noren Eriksen,
Stacy Gomez and
Victoria Ramirez.
