FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2019) - The Queens College men's soccer team needed a win on Saturday (Nov. 9) over Molloy and some help from other teams in the conference standings to make the four-team East Coast Conference Tournament. The Knights did get the help they needed---in the form of wins by Bridgeport and Mercy---but QC was unable to win on its own field, falling to Molloy by a 2-0 score to close out the season at Knights Field.
Molloy, by virtue of the victory, improves to 12-5-1 overall and 5-3 in East Coast Conference action; the Lions also clinched the No. 4 seed in the East Coast Conference Tournament. Queens falls to 6-7-3 and 3-4-1 in ECC play.
How It Happened
- The Knights fell into an early hole in the 12th minute of action thanks to a goal from Anthony Cestaro. Cestaro took a pass from Carlos Bonilla and beat Marek Strzelczyk to the near-post to put the Lions ahead by a 1-0 lead.
- Bonilla would add the important insurance marker in the 52nd minute on a breakaway as his shot deflected off of Strzelczyk and into the back of the net.
- Queens had several chances to cut the deficit, primarily from Romario Hulea, who had three golden chances in the final stages of the game denied by Molloy goalie Dennis Mejia.
Knights That Shined
- Hulea took six shots in his final game in a QC uniform and had three targets late in the contest.
- Kevin Quituizaca and Cristian Villalta also had two shots apiece for the Knights in the effort.
- Strzelczyk faced one other shot on goal and made the save for the Knights.
