Women's Tennis Dispatches Regional Power Adelphi in 6-1 Contest Sunday

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 13, 2019) - The Queens College women's tennis team stared down an intimidating regional opponent on Sunday (Oct. 13) and ended up claiming a 6-1 victory over Adelphi University at the Queens College Tennis Center. The Knights improved to 7-0 on the season as Adelphi dropped to 9-3 overall with the defeat.

Queens took advantage of Adelphi only having five players, which meant that the Knights led the match 1-0 as doubles play began by virtue of a later default at sixth-singles. It also meant that QC needed to win just one of the two doubles matches to secure the point in tandem competition; the Knights, however, made sure to win both matches to leave little doubt. Luisa Auffarth and Maja Makal were winners at the No. 1 position, defeating AU's Barbie Quagliardi and Nicole Kielan by a 6-3 margin. Meanwhile, the second-tandem of Louisa Brunetti and Lovisa Engstrand triumphed over the previously unbeaten duo of Amanda Franstedt and Nicole Stay in a 6-4 decision.

Makal steamrolled her way to a victory in second-singles, defeating Kielan by a 6-1, 6-3 score to put Queens within a point of the victory. That came at the No. 5 flight as freshman Gabriela Sciarotta took care of Lea Baschanow in a 6-3, 6-4 decision to clinch the victory for the Knights. After Franstedt defeated Ostoja (6-3, 6-3) at third-singles, Brunetti finished up a come-from-behind win at fourth-singles over Nicole Stay by set scores of 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3). Meanwhile, the top-flight of singles featured a premier draw match-up as Auffarth---the 2019 East Coast Conference Preseason Player of the Year---squared off with Quagliardi, who was the 2018 ECC Rookie and Player of the Year for New York Tech. Auffarth battled to win a 7-5 first set before slamming the door emphatically with a 6-1 runaway in the second set to lock up the final point of the match.

The Knights will take the court as a team on Oct. 21 in a match-up with the District of Columbia at 12 p.m. that will determine the No. 1 overall seed in the ECC Women's Tennis Championship to come later that week. Prior to that, however, Makal will be heading to the ITA National Championship Tournament from Oct. 17-20 in Rome, Ga. by virtue of her winning the ITA East Region singles crown last month.
