Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. - Junior Erin Vernillo registered two goals, including the game winner with 33 seconds remaining, in the Queens College women's team's 2-1 victory over Philadelphia U. Wednesday afternoon at QC Soccer Field. The win was the first on the season for the Knights, and the first career victory for rookie head coach Nicole Pacapelli.
With the score knotted at one, junior Alexis Qualle intercepted a Philadelphia clear attempt. Once corralled, she found Vernillo in the middle of the field. The forward proceeded to connect on a shot that found the far side of the right post.
The Rams opened the scoring on their first shot of the game. Alex Reyes took a shot from deep that spun out of the hands of starting keeper Nicole Cranny and into the net. From there, the Knights responded with four shots in the period, including two on goal that were stopped by Philadelphia keeper Erin Tinneny.
The Knights had a golden chance to tie the game midway through the second half. After a Philadelphia foul, junior Maya Emme's free kick hit the cross bar. Just under three minutes later, Vernillo connected on the equalizer. After gathering a loose ball, Vernillo lofted a soft shot on net. The ball bounced over the head over Tinneny and rolled through the net.
With the score even, QC held a 5-1 advantage on shots until Vernillo's game winner. QC held a 14-10 advantage on shots in the game, and 7-2 margin in corner kicks.
Cranny made four saves in net for the Knights. With just under 30 minutes remaining, junior Megan entered the contest. Tinneny finished with five stops in the game. The Knights are back in action Saturday afternoon at home against Bentley (2:00 pm).
