QC Women's Soccer Topped By New Haven In Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, CT - The Queens College women's soccer team fell in its season opener to New Haven, 2-0, Thursday afternoon at Kayo Field.  The match was a homecoming for new head coach Nicole Pacapelli, who faced not only her alma mater but the squad she had coached for the last two seasons.

The Chargers broke a scoreless tie in the 30th minute when Danielle Widmann notched a goal off assists from Sierra Stein and Rachel Dempsey.  Off a free kick from 30 yards out, Widmann finished with a header.  Just out of halftime, Sarah Bosco pushed New Haven ahead 2-0 in the 47th minute.  After a cross by Nicole Caruso, Bosco finished with her left foot.

Outshot 12-0 in the opening segment, the Knights collected five attempts in the second half.  Junior Erin Vernillo posted Queens' first shot in the 70th minute, one of her team leading three in the contest, and two on net.  Junior Kaitlin Shea tallied the other two QC shots.

The Chargers held a 23-5 advantage in shots in the contest, while the Knights registered four corner kick attempts to New Haven's one.  Junior Megan Deak made 10 stops in net for Queens, while Deandra Nash tallied three saves for the Chargers.  The Knights are back in action Wednesday, Sept. 7, when they host Philadelphia U. (4:00 pm).
