Box Score NEWARK, DEL. - The Queens College women's soccer team evened its 2015 record at 1-1 with a 2-0 victory Sunday over Wilmington University at the QU Athletics Complex.
"It was a convincing win, headed by a great defensive effort from the back four along with a clean sheet for Megan (Deak)," said head coach Carl Christian. "The ladies did a great job controlling the game and getting the result."
Senior Bridget Gleason got the Knights on the board in the 18th minute, when she pushed a header in the near post following a corner kick by freshman Adriana Mendrinos. Mendrinos in her second career game was credited with her first career point on the play.
Queens added to its lead in the 78th minute, getting a through ball down the middle of the field from sophomore Alexis Qualle. Sophomore Erin Vernillo raced onto it and had a one on one with WU goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams, sliding the ball past Williams for the 2-0 lead.
Overall in the contest, the Knight outshot the Wildcats 17-3, including 10-0 in the second half. Vernillo led the squad with five shots, while sophomore Taylor Bonanno had four attempts.
Williams made six saves for Wilmington, while Deak made two stops for her first career QC win. The Knights continue non-conference action Wednesday on the road at Philadelphia University at 4:00 pm.
