Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's soccer team made it four in a row in East Coast Conference play with Saturday's 1-0 victory over Dowling College. It was the Knights' third clean sheet in the last four games, and it solidified the team's hold over second place in the conference table.
Returning home after a season-high five-game road streak, the Knights were early aggressors against the Golden Lions. Consecutive headers in the 13th minute came close to putting Queens up a goal in the early stages of the match. Senior midfielder Glen Reid's try hit the crossbar, and junior Brian Belfont's follow-up drew a team save by the opposition. Continuing the pressure in the 18th minute, senior forward Paul Sandoval had his attempt blocked, and senior defender Aitor Gurrutxaga's header off the ricochet clanged off the post. Outside of Dowling's Kevin Lamm attempting a shot on goal in the 41st minute, neither team was able to create any further chances before the half and entered intermission in a scoreless draw.
A pair of Dowling players, Alex Hales and Bobby Cranor earned two quick yellow cards for their fouls in the 48th and 51st minutes to begin the second half. Then, seconds after subbing on in the 59th minute, Belfont scored the match's opening goal on his third attempt following a rebound. It was Belfont's second goal of the season.
With the score 1-0 in favor of Queens, it was up to junior goalkeeper Robbie Webster to secure the team win. Fresh off of earning recognition on the East Coast Conference Weekly Honor Roll, the native of Perth, Australia, recorded another fine match for the Knights. He stopped three shots against Dowling, the first of which came before halftime and the other two came following Belfont's goal, and earned his third clean sheet of the season.
After Saturday's win, the Knights own sole possession of second place in the ECC with a 5-2 conference record. Dowling, meanwhile, slipped to 3-3 in conference play and 3-7-1 overall.
Up next for Queens is an away matchup with Georgian Court on Thursday, Oct. 22. The Knights will be tested against the Lions, who are in the midst of four-game winning streak and sit in sixth place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Kickoff in Lakewood, N.J., is scheduled for 3:30.
