Box Score Arlington, Va. - The Queens College men's soccer team opened East Coast Conference play with a 4-2 setback against the University of the District of Columbia in a game played in Arlington, Virginia on Wednesday. Paul Sandoval and Glen Reid accounted for the Knights' goals.
It was a tale of two halves for QC on Wednesday, as they surrendered four goals in the first half, only to bounce back with a pair of markers in the second forty-five. UDC got on the board almost eight minutes into play. A direct kick just outside the box put the Firebirds up, 2-0, in the 19th minute. UDC added goals in the 26th and 27th minutes to lead 4-0 at the break.
Queens came alive in the second half, outshooting UDC, 10-4 and doubling the Firebirds up in corner kicks, 4-2. The first QC goal came int he 59th minute when Paul Sandoval blasted a shot from just outside the 18 to put the Knights on the board. Queens doubled the score in 70th minute when Glen Reid, the team's leading scorer from a season ago, finished a cross from Isaiah Kossinne.
The Knights nearly made it a one-goal game in the 80th minute when Reid dribbled past UDC keeper, Louis Connor, and put a shot on net, but Elio Hernandez made a terrific defensive play to block Reid's shot right in front of the goal. The Firebirds held on for the 4-2 win.
Queens took five corner kicks to just three by the Firebirds. Daniel Saint Louis and Gustavo Holtz Rocha de Lima saw their first action of the season for the Knights. QC men's soccer, now 0-3 on the year, returns to action on Saturday, September 20, when they host NYIT. The kickoff for that game is slated for noon.
