Women's Soccer Pushes Unbeaten Streak to Three, with 1-1 Draw versus NYIT

Box Score

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College women's soccer team pushed its unbeaten streak to three game after earning a 1-1, double overtime draw with NYIT.  The game was the conference opener for both sides.

It was NYIT who came on the offensive early, keeping the play in the Knights' zone for the first 25 minutes.  In fact, the Bears managed five shots, but the score remained scoreless.  The 40th minute largely revealed the offensive gameplan Queens would employ as they earned a corner kick and brought several defensive players forward into the box.  Courtney Locurcio took the kick and put the ball into the box where Bridget Gleason got a head to it and forced the NYIT keeper to make the save.  This combination would hook up later in the game.

The game was scoreless at the half, but the Bears switched goalies to start the second half.  Just five minutes into the second session, the Bears got on the board when Alexandra Liddiard dumped a fifty-fifty ball into the middle of the box.  Several Knights defenders, including goalie, Mersina Onesto, went for the ball, but Rachel Spampinato came out with it and buried it in the open net to put the Bears ahead, 1-0.

Queens answered by attacking and evened the score barely two minutes later.  Locurcio took yet another corner kick (Queens had nine to just two for NYIT) and once again put the ball into the penalty area.  Gleason got her head to it and went back to the far post where Erika Riera was able to tap it in for the game-tying marker.  The score was level at 1-1.

The Knights nearly put the game away in the 78th minute when Nicolette Scrozzo got away from her defender, got to a long ball and chipped it over the keeper's head for the go-ahead goal.  However, the marker was disallowed due to an offsides call.

The game went through two overtimes without any additional scoring and concluded in a 1-1 draw.  Mersina Onesto made three saves in the tie.  Antoinette Koskinas made her QC debut as a substitute in the second half.  Scrozzo and Riera each took three shots to lead the Knights.  Itzel Guzman keyed a strong backline that limited NYIT to just one goal.

The Queens College women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, September 20, when they face Adelphi in Garden City, New York.  The kickoff for that match is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
