Box Score

Shirley, N.Y. -  The Queens College women's soccer team fell to Dowling 2-1, in a match played in Shirley, New York on Saturday.  Senior goalie, Mersina Onesto made five saves and Courtney Locurcio accounted for the Knights' goal in the game.

Queens jumped out to an early lead in the sixth-minute when the Golden Lions committed a foul in the six minutes.  On the ensuing kick, Locurcio blasted a shot from 30 yards out and curled the ball into the top corner of the net, giving the Knights a 1- lead.

Ten minutes later, Onesto was challenged for the first time in the game and she made the save to keep QC ahead, 1-0.  Onesto wasn't as fortunate in the 25th-minute when Dowling tied the game off a corner kick.  Christine Verrelle had the equalizer.  Dowling had a shot on goal at the end of the first half that Onesto parryed to keep the score level at 1-1.

Onesto made two more saves in the second half before the Golden Lions scored the game-winner.  In the 79th-minute, Kelly McQuail scored on a breakaway and Dowling took a 2-1 lead.  Erin Vernillo had a shot on goal in the closing seconds, but it was stopped by the keeper and Doling won 2-1.

With the defeat, the Knights fell to 4-8-3 overall and 2-5-1 in the East Coast Conference.  The team closes out its season next Saturday, November 1, when they host Mercy at noon.  The Senior Day celebration will take place prior to the contest.
