Gurruchaga's Game-Winner Helps Knights Blank Daemen, 2-0

Box Score

Flushing, N.Y. - For the second straight game, it was the center back of the Knights' defense, junior, Aitor Gurruchaga, who scored the deciding goal in a Queens win.  On Friday in Flushing, it was his header off a corner kick that lifted QC to a 2-0 shutout of Daemen; giving the Knights their first East Coast Conference victory of the season.

The Knights dominated play early, pushing the offensive attack from the opening whistle.  The team managed seven shots before Daemen could muster a lone attempt in the 18th minute.  Queens would take the lead early in the 21st minute.

After earning a corner kick off of some pressing offense, Nikolas Maher twisted the set piece into the back of the six-yard box where Gurruchaga, a 6-3 defender, got his head on the ball and curled it inside the near post for his second goal of the season.  It was also the second-straight game in which he has scored the game-winning marker.

The Knights kept the ball in the Wildcats' end of the pitch for the majority of the first half.  They outshot Daemen, 12-4 in the first 45 minutes and managed the lone goal when Gurruchaga and Maher connected.

The second half was much more physical and rough as four different players were shown yellow cards.  Just past the hour mark, QC made the score 2-0 when fellow sophomores, Georgios Thomatos and Nicholas Matusewicz hooked up on a goal.  Thomatos had the ball down the right side.  He lost his defender and put a ball into the 16-yard box where Matsuewicz beat the keeper to the near side.  Queens went on to win, 2-0.

In the victory, the Knights dominated the offense, outshooting Daemen 16-10 and taking 11 corners to just two for the Wildcats.  James Brostowski earned his fourth win of the season and made five saves to earn the clean sheet.

The Queens College men's soccer team returns to action on Sunday, October 19, when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 1:30 PM.  The game will be part of the athletics alumni weekend tailgate.
