Box Score North Andover, Mass. - The Queens College women's soccer team spent Columbus Day in a tilt against Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. Despite three shots on goal from Erin Vernillo, the Knights fell to the Warriors, 3-0.
It was an uphill battle for Queens against the Warriors, battling less than ideal weather conditions as well as two early Merrimack goals. The Northeast-10 team scored twice in the first two minutes of action, and QC was playing catch-up the rest of the game.
The Knights managed three shots in the first half of play, as Nicolette Scrozzo took a couple and Haley Gibbons had one that was blocked. Queens trailed 2-0 at the break.
Three minutes into the second half, Vernillo tested the new keeper for Merrimack, forcing her to make a save on a blast. Approximately three minutes later, Vernillo let go another shot for goal, but the Warriors' keeper parried the ball away from danger. Just past the hour mark, Merrimack scored its third goal of the game to lead 3-0.
The Knights nearly got on back in the 63 minute when Scrozzo's flick on goal hit the post and deflected to safety. Almost ten minutes later, Vernillo tried her third shot on goal of the match, but once again, the keeper made the save to keep the score at 3-0 for the Warriors. Bridget Gleason had another shot on goal, but it proved to be fruitless as well.
With the defeat, the Knights are now 2-7-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the East Coast Conference. The team returns to action on Friday, October 17, at noon, when they host Daemen.
