Flushing, N.Y. -- The Queens College Women's Soccer team lost to St. Thomas Aquinas 1-0 on Saturday in an East Coast Conference match up played in Flushing, New York. The Knights were not without their chances, however, as the team would attempt thirteen shots on the afternoon with seven on target.
It was the visiting Spartans who were the aggressors early on in this contest. Perhaps a response to the rainy and cold conditions, the team looked to put pressure on the Knights' defense with a stream of balls played into their box. First it was a St. Thomas player finding space in front of the goal just inside the box off a well paced through ball that forced Knights' keeper Mersina Onesto into making a save in the eighth minute. Shortly thereafter in the 10th minute, a loose ball played off the foot of opposing defender Maddison Lord found its way to Lindsey Sansone in the box, who was able to head it past Onesto for the match's lone goal.
It appeared as if the opposing team's goal sparked the Queens College attack for the rest of the first half as the team had multiple opportunities to score. Junior Gena Koutsounadis wasted no time going after an equalizer, hitting a shot that hit the left post for a corner in the 12th minute. Then in the 19th minute, junior Nicolette Scrozzo setup senior Kristina Gabrielsen behind the St. Thomas defender with some space, only for Gabrielsen's shot to veer wide right. A corner kick from freshman Courtney Locurcio found the head of a surging Bridget Gleason in the 26th minute, but the senior from San Antonio, Texas sailed the ball over the net. Another corner coming in the 43rd minute found freshman Taylor Bonanno who created a frenzy in front of the far post that the St. Thomas keeper was quick to cover up. At intermission the score was 1-0 in favor of the Spartans.
With St. Thomas content to slow the match down with the lead, Queens College had an early opportunity in the second half when freshman Haley Gibbons forced the opposing keeper into a diving save from inside the box in the 50th minute. The Knights' attack fell off as the half pressed on, with their only real opportunity coming off a Locurcio cross from the right flank that found Scrozzo on the far side of the net for a header that went wide left in the 70th minute. From there the match played out accordingly with St. Thomas Aquinas holding off for the road victory.
With the loss, the Knights fall to 2-6-2 overall and 0-4-1 in conference play. The team will look to bounce back on Monday, October 13, when Queens College heads up to North Andover, Massachusetts to take on the Warriors of Merrimack College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
