Box Score Bridgeport, Conn. - In a season that has been marred with bad luck for the Queens College men's soccer team, they received a bit of good fortune on Wednesday in Bridgeport as a Purple Knights' own goal lifted QC to a 2-1 triumph, marking the first win of the season for the Knights. Georgios Thomatos and Lawrence Nikaj hooked up on the first goal.
James Brostowski got the start in goal for Queens, and despite a raw, rainy pitch, the sophomore made three saves to secure the win. Neither side scored in the first half but it was Glen Reid who got the shooting underway for QC when he ripped a shot on goal just barely ten minutes into play. Reid, Aitor Gurruchaga and James Dukas all had shots in the first half. Bridgeport also took three tries, but none were on net.
The second half opened with the Knights pushing the attack as Gurruchaga took his second shot and Pol Narbona flicked the ball on net in the 53rd minute. It took past the hour mark for the Purple Knights to test Brostowski, but the goalie made his first save on a shot in the 63rd minute. Brostowski was less lucky five minutes later when an initial Bridgeport shot was blocked, but the rebound was deflected into the goal. Once again, it seemed that Queens was snakebitten as they fell behind, 1-0.
It would be the captain, Reid, and a pair of sophomores who would change the Knights' fortune as Reid took a corner kick in the 82nd minute. On the kick, Nikaj got a foot on the ball and put it towards net, where Thomatos outleapt the defense and put a head on the ball, sending it into the back of the net. The game was even at 1-1.
In the closing minutes, the Knights put the game away for good. With QC on the attack, Reid put a ball into the 18-yard box of Bridgeport, where it was misplayed by the defender and went into the net for an own goal. The Knights held on and won, 2-1.
The Knights outshot Bridgeport, 15-11, with Reid and Dukas leading the attack by trying five shots and three shots. The goal by Thomatos was his first of the season and Nikaj earned his first assist.
