Mersina Onesto Makes Four Saves in 1-0 Loss to Bridgeport

Bridgeport, Conn. - The Queens College women's soccer team lost to Bridgeport 1-0 on Wednesday in an East Coast Conference game played in Bridgeport, Connecticut.  Despite the loss, QC goalie, Mersina Onesto, stopped four shots.

It was the Purple Knights who cameout aggressively against Queens in the first 14 minutes of action.  Bridgeport was whistled for four fouls and took three shots in that span.  The game's lone goal came in the 14th minute when the Bridgeport player stole the ball from the defense and blasted a shot past Onesto from way out.

QC had a decent scoring chance in the 28th minute when they won a corner kick.  On the direct kick, Courtney Locurcio found Nicolette Scrozzo who put a shot wide of the net.  Queens had another opporunity to even the score in the 43rd minute when Erika Riera threw a shot on net that was saved the Purple Knights goalie.  Bridgeport led 1-0 at the half.

Queens pushed the attack immediately after halftime and Gena Koutsounadis blasted a shot that was parried by the Bridgeport keeper.  On the rebound, Erin Vernillo flicked the ball at net and the goalie made another save to keep the Purple Knights ahead, 1-0.  Queens had no other scoring chances in the half and Bridgeport won 1-0.

With the loss, the Knights fall to 2-4-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference.  The team returns to action on Saturday, October 4, when they face LIU Post on the road.  The kickoff with the Pioneers is scheduled for noon.
