Box Score Amherst, N.Y.- The Queens College women's
soccer team improved to 4-2 overall, and 1-0 in East Coast
Conference play with a 3-1 win over Daemen College on Saturday from
Amherst, New York. The Knights got a goal each from Lorena
Russi, Rebecca Laporte and Kristina Gabrielsen.
The Knights used the first ten minutes of action to score a pair
of goals, and build an insurmountable, 2-0 advantage. The
opening marker came in the eighth minute as Laporte scored off a
feed from Russi. Russi found Laporte on the far right wing,
and the midfielder put the ball past off the far post and into the
net.
Less than a minute later, Laporte returned to favor to Russi as
she threw the ball long into the box and Russi deflected it in past
the keeper to put Queens ahead, 2-0. Two minutes later,
Mersina Onesto would make her only save of the match to keep QC up,
2-0. The Knights managed three more shots in the half, but
didn't connect on any as they led at the break, 2-0.
The second half began with neither side conjuring up any scoring
chances until the Wildcats broke through in the 66th
minute. Kacey Bougard played a through-ball to Samantha
Engel, who beat Onesto with a low shot on goal. The marker
pulled Daemen within one, at 2-1.
Kristina Gabrielsen came on in the second half as a substitute
in the 77th minute, and ten minutes later, she would
have a huge impact on the game. Laporte put a ball past the
defense and Gabrielsen caught up to it on a breakaway, and beat the
goalie for her first marker of the season. More importantly,
the insurance goal increased Queens' cushion to two, at
3-1. Daemen never threatened the rest of the game and the
Knights had the result.
The team finishes off its Western New York road trip on Sunday,
September 22, when they face Roberts Wesleyan College in
Rochester. The kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
