Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College women's soccer team did something that no other East Coast Conference team has done this season, beat the University of Bridgeport, which the Knights did in a convincing, 2-0 win, in front of the Flushing crowd on Wednesday. Bridgeport entered the contest ranked 16th in the nation.
The game favored the Knights from the outset as the windy conditions and physical play got the Purple Knights a bit rattled. In fact, Bridgeport was whistled for a pair of yellow cards in the first half.
QC capitalized on the early momentum as they earned a corner kick in the sixth minute. On the ensuing kick, Kristina Ikonomou lifted the ball into the goalie box where Bridget Gleason jumped and got her head to it, putting it inside the far corner of the net and putting the Knights ahead, 1-0.
Later in the half, the Knights earned another corner, this one from the opposite side of the field as the prior. Nearly an identical play occurred as Ikonomou bent another ball into the box where Rebecca LaPorte leaped over everyone for a header that found the back of the net. The Knights took a 2-0 lead into the break.
The second half was more like the first, where Bridgeport didn't get any scoring chances as the back line of Gleason, Bernadette Wyndham, Lisa Cassata and Alexandra Troiano limited the Purple Knights offensive attack. In fact, the only save Mersina Onesto had to make came in the 89th minute.
QC outshot the Purple Knights 6-4 and took four corners to Bridgeport's two. Ikonmou earned a pair of assists in the game.
The team closes out its regular season on Saturday, November 2, when they host LIU Post at noon. The Senior Day ceremony will take place prior to the kickoff.
