Box Score Sparkill, N.Y. – The Queens College women's soccer team blanked the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans 2-0 in a game played in Sparkill, New York on Saturday. The win is their third East Coast Conference victory of the 2013 season. They improved to 8-4-1 overall.
Overall, QC shot the soccer ball 24 times, reaching the net 11 times. In the first half, the Knights' Ashley Martin headed the ball past STAC keeper Lauren Morales for the first goal of the game. The second half saw senior Lorena Russi net her team-leading eighth goal of the season off a beautiful cross by Elizabeth Eberhart.
Russi's eight goals have her tied for second on the ECC leaderboard with Danielle Puddefoot of the University of Bridgeport and Lindsey Thompson of Dowling College. Kacey Bougard of ECC newcomer Daemen College leads the ECC goal scoring with a total of nine.
Defensively, the Knights allowed just three shots from STAC in the first half and only one shot in the second half. Of the four total shots, only two reached goal and were turned away by keeper Mersina Onesto. She ranks fourth on the ECC leaderboard with 7 wins on the season.
The Knights women's soccer team will next visit East Coast Conference opponent NYIT on Saturday, October 19th in Old Westbury, N.Y. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 PM.
