Women's Soccer Defeats Mercy, 3-2, in East Coast Conference Game

The Queens College women's soccer team picked up its first East Coast Conference victory with a 3-2 triumph over Mercy on Saturday from the Knights Soccer Field in Flushing.  Queens is now 6-2-2 overall, while the Mavericks fell to 3-8.

The game began with the Knights pushing the ball into the offensive end throughout the first ten minutes of play.  Queens used the through ball to create several chances, the best coming in the tenth minute as Sara Boucher (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) put a through ball into the 18-yard box, but was a little long.

Five minutes later, a cross from Lorena Russi (Rego Park, N.Y./Townsend Harris) was placed into the box, but didn't find a Knights' player for the finish.

Queens College finally got on the board in the 16th minute.  An accurately placed through-ball off the foot of Gena Koutsounadis (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) found Janine Guerra (Whitestone, N.Y.) in the top of the box who beat the goalie to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.  It was Guerra's second marker of the season and the first helper for Koutsounadis.

Mercy tied the game in the 32nd minute as MacKenzie Cochrane stole ball, ran on a breakaway and beat Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill. /Lincoln Way East) to her right for the equalizer.

Barely a minute later, the Knights responded with their second go-ahead goal of the game courtesy of the first tally of the year from Kristina Ikonomou (Commack, N.Y./Commack) off the assist from Guerra.  Queens led 2-1 at the half.

The second saw Mercy tie game for the second time as Crystal Mena buried a free kick on a re-start in the 50th minute to make the score 2-2.

The Knights once again pushed the action on the offensive end as they nearly scored their third goal just past the hour make when a volley from Lisa Cassata (Massapequa, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) hit the crossbar and came to the feet of Sarah Boucher (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside), who them blasted a pair of shots at goal that were both turned aside by the goalie.

Less than ten minutes later, Queens' persistence would pay off as Boucher scored her team-leading, fifth goal of the year to put the Knights ahead for good, 3-2.

Breakey made a save in the 89th minute to help preserve the win and the Knights claimed the 3-2 victory.  The team returns to action on Wednesday, October 3 at Molloy at 5:00 PM.
