A Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Men's Soccer to 1-0 Shutout of Mercy

v

After the Mercy College and Queens College women's soccer teams combined to score five goals in the opening salvo of the doubleheader from the Knights Soccer Field on Saturday, the male counterparts played through a game that saw several scoring chances, but just one goal, in the Knights' 1-0 blanking of the Mavericks.

Both sides played physically early on and as a result, Queens pushed the ball into the Mercy end.  In the 13th minute, Glen Reid (Falkirk, Scotland/British School of Houston) played a through ball that was just too long for Paul Sandoval (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) to finish.

Mercy tried to grab the lead in the 38th minute by playing the ball up the flank of the Queens defense.  Daniel Iamiceli flicked a shot at goal that was parried by Sean Geoghegan (Kildare, Ireland/Naas CBS) back to the feet of Iamiceli, who then let loose a second shot that beat Geoghegan but was deflected to safety by Grant Edick (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside), who slide across the goal line to make the save.

The game went into the half scoreless, despite both sides having ample opportunities to put the ball in the net.

The second stanza saw Queens get a great scoring chance just past the hour mark as Danny Stoker (London, England/RSSKL) put a ball on goal that Mercy goalie Nick Papas flicked over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.

A short time later, in nearly an identical situation, Tyler Iocco (New Hyde Park, N.Y. /New Hyde Park) placed another ball on net that was once again tipped over the bar by Papas.

The offensive onslaught from Queens would finally be rewarded in the 69th minute as Sardar Karabay (Flushing, N.Y./Edison) played a through-ball into the box that found Edick, who then beat Papas to the near side for the goal.

Mercy had several chances at the equalizer, with a prime opportunity coming in the 69th minute as Ransmond Aboagye played the ball into the box where William Koki blasted a pair of shots in succession towards the goal, but both were turned aside as Geoghegan.

Geoghegan would record a game-high seven saves in the shutout, but none was bigger than the one he collected in the 75th minute as Luis Perez took a penalty kick that Geoghegan knocked to safety to keep the clean sheet intact.  He made one later save as Queens held on for the 1-0 win.

Geoghegan collected seven saves for the third time in 2012, while the Knights handed the Mavericks just their second loss of the season.

The men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, October 3, when they face Molloy College in the second game of a doubleheader from Rockville Centre, New York.  The game begins at 7:30 PM.
