Women's Soccer Blanks Concordia, 1-0, in an Non-Conference Matchup

The Queens College women's soccer team earned a positive result with a 1-0 blanking of Concordia College in a soccer game played in Flushing, New York on Thursday afternoon.  After the out-of-conference victory, the Knights improved to 5-2-2 while the Clippers fell to 0-8.

Queens dominated possession early on as the Knights kept the ball in the Concordia end of the pitch for the first nine plus minutes of action.  They had a great scoring opportunity in  the tenth minute when Kristina Ikonomou (Commack, N.Y./Commack) hit the crossbar with a blast from inside the 18-yard box that hit the crossbar.

Ten minutes later, the Knights nearly got on the scoreboard as Ikonomou found Lorena Russi (Rego Park, N.Y./Townsend Harris) at the top of the 18-year blast, and Russi let go a flick that went just wide of the goal to keep the game scoreless.  In the 25th minute, Russi tried a soft chip from the top of the box that was just over the crossbar once again.

Russi, who was around the ball throughout the game, set-up the eventual winning goal as she stole the ball deep in the Clippers' end of the pitch, played it through to Janine Guerra (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), who crossed it through the box to Alexandra Troiano (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North) who put the ball inside the near post for the goal and a 1-0 lead for Queens.

The 1-0 score would never be challenged until the 50th minute, where Concordia played a through ball by the middle of the Knights defense, which forced Queens' goalie Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) to come off her line and deflect the ball to safety.  Breakey made a pair of saves to record the clean sheet as Queens held on for the 1-0 win.

In the victory, the Knights outshot the Clippers 20-2 and took 14 corner kicks to their one.  Russi collected a game-high six shots while Ikonomou tallied four and Troiano three.

The women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, September 29, as they host the Mercy Mavericks in an East Coast Conference Game from Knights Field in Flushing.  The game time is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
