Flushing, N.Y. (September 20th, 2012) – After
being rained out Tuesday afternoon, the Knights men's soccer
team made up their ECC opener against St. Thomas Aquinas. The match
ended in a scoreless draw after two overtime periods, putting the
Knights at 2-1-2 on the 2012 season (0-0-1 in ECC).
The game was a physical battle throughout with clear scoring
opportunities few and far between. The Knights matched up
well despite a slow start to the game. In the latter stages of the
first half, Queens started to gain momentum as senior Danny Stoker
and junior Jose Lopez caused the STAC Spartan defense some
problems. Freshman Paul Sandoval had a scoring chance in the half
for the Knights but to no avail. With the game scoreless after one
half, a firm right-footed shot in the second half by junior Tyler
Iocco was saved by the STAC keeper and regulation ended with the
game still tied 0-0.
Despite both teams' efforts to break the deadlock in the
first and second OT periods, the defenses continued to have the
upper hand, eventually causing the gsme to end in a deadlock 0-0
draw.
The Knights did, however, earn a hard-fought first point in
conference play and extended their unbeaten streak to 4 games
heading into another conference match-up on Saturday at Dowling
College.
