Men's Soccer Falls to Dominican in Double Overtime, 2-1

Even though classes were cancelled at Queens College on Monday for the Columbus Day holiday, the men's soccer team continued to log long hours, as it played its second straight double-overtime contest, losing to Dominican, 2-1, in a game played in Orangeburg, New York.  After getting a result with a draw versus UDC on Saturday, the team wasn't as fortunate with the loss to the Chargers on Monday.

The Knights were the aggressors early on as Jose Lopez (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North) blasted a shot on goal in the 12th minute that forced Chargers' goalie, Andres Ruiz, to make a save.  Lopez took a game-high five shots in the contest.

After Queens' goalie Sean Geoghegan (Kildare, Ireland/Naas City) made a pair of back-to-back saves in the 18th minute, he wasn't as fortunate shortly thereafter.

Dominican would get on the scoreboard first when Queens was whistled for a foul in the 20th minute that resulted in a penalty shot for the Chargers.  Jorge Zubillaga calmly drilled the penalty kick past Geoghegan and Dominican led, 1-0.

Despite having several more scoring chances, the Knights failed to get on the board until after the hour mark, when, in the 76th minute, Paul Sandoval (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) found Alexander Schweitzer (Bayside, N.Y./Holy Cross) who beat Ruiz for the equalizer.  It was the third marker of the year for the defensive player.

Queens College had two more chances to score in the final 15 minutes as Ruiz was forced to parry shots from Sandoval and Lopez.

For the second straight game, the Knights went into overtime (where there was no scoring) and then into a second extra period.  Three minutes into the second overtime, Dominican came away with the golden goal as Sonny Narro scored from 25 yards out to give the Chargers a 2-1 win.

The Knights men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, October 10, when they face Stonehill in Easton, Massachusetts.  The game with the Skyhawks is scheduled to begin at3:30.
