Knights Edge Molloy, 2-1, to Earn Seventh Win of the Season

The Queens College women's soccer team improved to 7-2-2 overall, including a 2-1-1 conference mark, with a  2-1 victory of Molloy College in a game played on Wednesday from the Dean Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, New York.    Lorena Russi (Rego Park, N.Y./Townsend Harris) and Rebecca Laporte (London, England/Ashmole) accounted for both of the Knights' tallies.

Queens pushed the attack early on, getting the ball into the Lions' defensive end of the field and earning a corner kick in just the third minute.  In the sixth minute, the Knights had their first scoring chance as Janine Guerra (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) lifted a shot that forced Molloy keeper Nicole DellaPorta to make a save.

The offensive pressure paid off for the Knights in the 16th minute, as they found the back of the net for the first time in the game.  Nicolette Scrozzo (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) played a through ball on to the head of Russi, who put it inside the right post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for Queens.

After 22 minutes of back-and-forth play where neither side could muster an attack, the Knights doubled their lead to 2-0, courtesy of Laporte's first tally of the season, which was setup by a corner kick off the foot of Kristina Ikonomou (Commack, N.Y./Commack).

Queens closed out the half without allowing anymore Molloy shots on goal and had a 2-0 lead at the break.

The second half saw Molloy trim the deficit in half as Alicia Mercurio chipped a Jacqui Valentine pass over the head of goalie  Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) for the goal.  From there, Breakey was forced to make a couple of saves down the stretch as the Lions tried to press for the equalizer, but it never came and the Knights had the 2-1 victory.

Queens outshot Molloy 11-5 and dominated the corner kicks, 5-1.  Breakey made a pair of saves in the win.

The Knights return to action on Sunday, October 7, when they host Franklin Pierce from Flushing, New York at 2:30.
