Women's Soccer Ties LIU Post, 1-1, in Double Overtime

There are no such things as moral victories in sports, but the Queens College women's soccer team came close to one on Saturday, as they tied undefeated LIU Post, 1-1, in an East Coast Conference game played in Brookville, New York.  With the draw, the Knights moved to 9-3-4 overall, 4-1-2 in the ECC, while the Pioneers are 13-1-2, 7-0-1 in conference.

QC took the lead in jut the twelfth minute of action as Janine Guerra (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) took a through ball past the midfielder and chipped it over the goalie, who came out of the net, for the unassisted goal, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.

Almost seven minutes later the game would be tied as LIU Post found the back of the net.  Hanna Westerling deflected a Susanne Vistnes shot into the bottom of the goal to even the score.

From there, neither side scored again in the first half as the Knights managed five shots on goal the rest of the half, and the Pioneers forced Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) to make a save on her end of the pitch.

The second half was a near microcosm of the first 45 minutes as both sides shutout their opponents with strong defense and stellar goalkeeping.  Once again, the two netminders were the story as Breakey made three saves, while her counterpart, Nicole Fierro, parried four of them.  The game finished in regulation tied at 1-1, and entered the first overtime.

In the extra frame, both teams managed a shot on goal and both goals turned the shots aside to keep the game level at 1-1 and force a second overtime.

The second extra frame had a pair of shots by QC and a lone shot by the Pioneers, but none of them went in and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

In the tie, Queens outshot LIU Post, 18-11 and had 13 shots on goal compared to their seven.  Breakey finished with six saves and Guerra tallied three shots on goal in the contest.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, October 27, when they host NYIT at noon.  The game will include the Senior Day ceremony to honor the seniors playing in their final contest with the team.
