The Queens College women's soccer team closed out
Homecoming weekend with a 2-0 shutout of St. Thomas Aquinas on
Sunday in Flushing. Sarah Boucher and Lorena Russi accounted
for both QC's goals.
The game began with STAC pushing the ball into the
Knights's end of the field, but the Queens defense was up to
task, as they were able to clear the ball without any real
danger.
Queens jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute
after the Spartans were whistled for a foul. On a restart,
Kristina Ikonomou lifted a ball to Lorena Russi in the middle
of the box, and Russi got a head on it and beat the goalie to the
near post.
At the half hour mark, Russi was on the left side of the pitch
and she found Sarah Boucher in the center of the box who put the
ball inside the far post giving the Knights a 2-0 lead.
The Knights defense shutout the Spartans the rest of the way and
Queens College had a 2-0 win. In the clean sheet, Queens
outshot STAC, 10-2, and led them in corner kicks 6-1.
With the win, Queens improved to 9-3-3 overall, 4-1-1 in the
East Coast Conference. The women return to action on
Saturday, October 20 at noon against LIU-Post.
